One dead, three injured in collision

SARIKEI: One person was killed and three others injured in an accident involving a lorry and a Public Works Department’s (JKR) Land Cruiser at Stok, about 17km from here yesterday morning.


The deceased had been identified as lorry driver Phun Mee Kiong, 33, while the three injured victims were Phun’s workmate, the Land Cruiser’s driver and his passenger, a staff member of the local JKR water supply section.


The three injured persons had been admitted at Sarikei hospital.


The fatal accident occurred at 10 am when Phun and another worker were transporting cement from Sarikei to worksite while the Land Cruiser was on its way back from Pakan to Sarikei.


Phun who hailed from Kuching was a worker at the new Sungai Nyelong Highway Bridge project which is about one kilometre from the scene of the accident.


Phun who was pinned to the seat of the wrecked vehicle was believed to have died on the spot. It took rescue workers awhile to extricate his body.
